Your ward councillor: what they can do, and what they cannot
Gurugram elected 36 councillors in March 2025. What the office controls, and how to work with it.
A councillor is the only elected person whose job is your street. They sit in the MCG House, which passes the budget, and on its committees. Turnout in 2025 was under 42 percent, so a few thousand votes decided most wards.
In their power
- Internal roads, streetlights, parks, sanitation and stray-animal services run by MCG.
- Ward development funds and the priority list of works.
- Raising an issue in the House and its committees.
Not in their power
- Master roads, master drains and bulk water: GMDA.
- HSVP sectors not yet transferred; licensed colonies still with the developer.
- Police, electricity, pollution enforcement.
How to work with them
Bring a list, not a grievance: five issues with photos, locations and ticket numbers. Ask which are MCG and what the timeline is. Follow up in writing. The ward directory lists every councillor with official sources.
