Segregate at source: what the 2016 rules ask of every household and society
Around 1,100 tonnes a day, most of it unprocessed. Half the fix is in residents' hands.
Gurugram produces around 1,100 tonnes of waste a day and processes very little of it. The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 put duties on both the corporation and the generator.
Every household
- Three streams: wet, dry, and domestic hazardous (batteries, medicines, sanitary waste, paint).
- Hand over only to the authorised collector; no dumping, no burning.
- Construction debris goes to the designated point, not the roadside.
Every society over 100 kg a day
Most gated societies and office complexes are bulk generators. They must process wet waste on site or through an authorised agency. Societies that have done it cut landfill waste by more than half.
What the corporation owes you
Door-to-door collection of segregated waste, separate transport, and processing rather than dumping. Collector mixing your streams? Report it on the GMDA portal or the Swachhata app with a photo. The Forum runs composting set-up clinics for societies.
